At the heart of this program is Sor Juana Inés, an original interdisciplinary creation by The Opera Atelier inspired by the life and legacy of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the extraordinary self-taught intellectual of 17th‑century Mexico. Widely regarded as Spanish America’s first feminist, Sor Juana defied the constraints imposed by colonial and ecclesiastical authority, producing some of the most profound writing in the Spanish language — all from within the confines of a nun’s cell. Her voice continues to resonate as one of the most powerful and enduring in the literary canon.
